Spiritual effects of travel teaching/pioneering

In speaking of spreading the fragrances of the Kingdom, ‘Abdu’l-Baha said:

"In movement there is life; in immobility there is death. The traveling of the teachers from place to place, country to country, and from the Occident to the Orient, is one of the greatest means for sowing spiritual seeds in the souls of the people."
- 'Abdu'l-Baha  (Words of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, recorded by Howard Stuven and Charles Mason, Haifa, May 1910; Star of the west, vol. 1, no. 11, September 27, 1910)

When teaching the Cause one should speak from the heart

…’Abdu’l-Baha said that the teacher should always speak from the heart, for only words from the heart reach the hearts of the hearers and has effect, whereas when one speaks not from the heart, the effect of his words is but a passing one. All teaching should be done by the Spirit working or speaking through the teacher, and should not come from the mentality of the individual. One should always use spiritual methods in teaching.
(Notes of comments made by ‘Abdu’l-Baha to Howard Stuven and Charles Mason, Haifa, May 1910; Star of the west, vol. 1, no. 11, September 27, 1910)

Inspiration

The heart, when pure and free, becomes inspired.

Humility

If a man considers himself humble and lowly in the Cause of God, he becomes glorified in all eyes. On the other hand, the moment he aspires to personal greatness, he falls into disgrace and oblivion.

About Kheiralla

When Mírzá Munír stated that one of the Arab travelers had spoken to him about Mírzá Kheiralla's arrogance and heedlessness, 'Abdu'l-Bahá replied:

"The poor man has become nameless and debased both in this world and in the Kingdom. What a high honor he had! But as he did not appreciate the fact, it all came to naught. He wished to be made the leader of America and wrote plainly to me to this effect. One of the answers I gave him was, 'Cast aside all mention of the ruler and the ruled, the governor and the governed.'"

To be thankful

One of the servants asked why man is not thankful when in comfort.

‘Abdu'l-Bahá replied, ‘It is due to negligence. Otherwise one must be aware and thankful when immersed in the sea of bounties.'

One’s spirit is naturally attracted to beautiful and graceful things

It is natural for the heart and spirit to take pleasure and enjoyment in all things that show forth symmetry, harmony, and perfection. For instance: a beautiful house, a well-designed garden, a symmetrical line, a graceful motion, a well written book, pleasing garments—in fact, all things that have in themselves grace or beauty are pleasing to the heart and spirit…

People react differently towards the Faith

Question by Inez Greeven during her pilgrimage in 1920:

"My friends came here, and they met you, and they visited the Holy Places, but they were unaffected. When I came here I was completely intoxicated with the greatness of the Cause.  Why didn't they become Baha'is?"

‘Abdu'l-Baha's answer:

“At the gate of the garden, some stand and look within, but do not care to enter. Others step inside, behold its beauty, but do not penetrate far. Still others encircle this garden, inhaling the fragrance of the flowers; and having enjoyed its full beauty, pass out again by the same gate. But there are always some who enter, and becoming intoxicated with the splendor of what they behold, remain for life to tend the garden."

Pure voice

All pure things are acceptable. For example: water— pure—-is acceptable; fresh air is most acceptable. As all pure things are acceptable and pleasing, therefore a pure voice is most acceptable, and causes great enjoyment.

There are two kinds of voices. One when the complete instrument is perfect, then the emission of sound is perfect. The second is when the instrument is imperfect, it affects the voice in such a way that it is far from pleasing. What we have just said refers to the voice itself.

Voice and music affect one’s spirit

…melodies, though they are material, are connected with the spiritual, therefore, they produce a great effect. A certain kind of melody makes the spirit happy, another kind makes it sad, another excites it to action.

All these feelings can be caused by voice and music, for through the nerves it moves and stirs the spirit. Even over animals, music has an effect. For example: When they wish to take a camel over a desert road, they attach to him some bells, or they play upon a flute, and this sound prevents him from realizing the fatigue of the journey; his nerves are affected, but he does not have an increase of thought, he feels nothing but physical sensation.

Music accentuates whatever feelings one has is in his/her heart

Whatever is in the heart of man, melody moves and awakens. If a heart full of good feelings and a pure voice are joined together, a great effect is produced. For instance: if there be love in the heart, through melody, it will increase until its intensity can scarcely be borne; but if bad thoughts are in the heart, such as hatred, it will increase and multiply. For instance: the music used in war awakens the desire for bloodshed. The meaning is that melody causes whatever feeling is in the heart to increase.

Human feelings – some are accidental & some based on the real nature of the individual

Some feelings occur accidentally and some have a foundation. For example: some people are naturally kind, but they may be accidentally upset by a wave of anger. But if they hear music, the true nature will reassert itself. Music really awakens the real, natural nature, the individual essence.

Human voice though physical has a connection with spirit

In the world of existence physical things have a connection with spiritual realities. One of these things is the voice, which connects itself with the spirit; and the spirit can be uplifted by this means—for though it is a physical thing, it is one of the material, natural organizations— therefore, it is effective.

A “conflagration, the like of which is not recorded in the past history of mankind”

A great melee of the civilized nations is in sight. A tremendous conflict is at hand. The world is at the threshold of a most tragic struggle.… Vast armies—millions of men—are being mobilized and stationed at their frontiers. They are being prepared for the fearful contest. The slightest friction will bring them into a terrific crash, and there will be a conflagration, the like of which is not recorded in the past history of mankind.

“one spark will set the whole of Europe aflame”

The European continent is like an arsenal, a storehouse of explosives ready for ignition, and one spark will set the whole of Europe aflame, particularly at this time when the Balkan question is before the world.

Battle of Armageddon

We are on the eve of the Battle of Armageddon referred to in the sixteenth chapter of Revelation. The time is two years hence, when only a spark will set aflame the whole of Europe.

The social unrest in all countries, the growing religious skepticism antecedent to the millennium, and already here, will set aflame the whole of Europe as is prophesied in the Book of Daniel and in the Book (Revelation) of John.

By 1917 kingdoms will fall and cataclysms will rock the earth.

The “object of life to a Baha'i is to promote the oneness of mankind”

The object of life to a Baha'i is to promote the oneness of mankind; Our aim is to produce a world civilization which in turn will react on the character of the individual.
- Shoghi Effendi (Remarks by Shoghi Effendi, recorded by Ruhiyyih Khanum, ‘The Priceless Pearl’)

Ruhiyyih Khanum:
I remember in the  course of a conversation Shoghi Effendi had with a former teacher  of his at the American University in Beirut, how beautifully he  answered this man's question as to what was the purpose of life to a Bahá'í. The Guardian answered that the object of life to a Bahá'í was to promote the oneness of mankind. He then went on to point out that Bahá'u'lláh had appeared at a time when His Message could and should be directed to the whole world and not merely to individuals; that salvation today was through world salvation, world change, world reform of society and that the world civilization resulting from this would in turn reflect upon the individuals composing it and lead to their redemption and reformation.

Over and over Shoghi Effendi made it clear in his writings and talks that the two processes must go on together -- reform of society, reform of personal character. There was never any doubt that individual regeneration, as he wrote to a non-Bahá'í in 1926, was the "sure and enduring foundation on which a reconstructed society" would develop and prosper. But how could one create a pattern for future  society, even a tiny embryo of the future World Commonwealth of Bahá'u'lláh, if all around its fringes it was still interwoven with the fabric of that society which was dying out, must die out, to make way for the new?

Heroic spirit

You cannot be a hero without action. This is the touchstone. Not movement, coming and going, but in the evidences of your character. Jacky [Marion Jack] is a heroine because of her conduct, the heroic spirit reveals itself in her. Martha [Martha Root] had the heroic action. She went 'til she dropped.

What qualities must one gain through tests to be considered a “chosen one” or “first fruit”?

In this day everyone must be tested, as the time of the ''chosen ones" to prove their worth is indeed very short. The day of attainment is drawing to a close for them. The "first fruits" must be ripened in spirit, mellowed in love, and consumed by their self-sacrifice and severance. None other are acceptable as first fruits, and all who fail to attain to the standard through the tests, are relegated to the "many who are called."
- 'Abdu'l-Baha  (Words of ‘Abdu'l-Baha in answer to questions asked by Dr. Edward C. Getsinger during a few brief meetings at Haifa, January 26 to February 5, 1915, and recorded by Dr. Getsinger at the time; Star of the West, vol. 6, no. 6, June 24, 1915)

What to do when: “one is in the right in a case in dispute, and his minority prevents him from establishing this rightful matter”

Blessed are they who are the means of making unity among the friends, and pity on those who in the right or wrong are the cause of discord. For instance: When one is in the right in a case in dispute, and his minority prevents him from establishing this rightful matter, instead of agitating the subject, if he will humbly submit to sacrifice his position for the sake of unity and peace, God will accept that sacrifice and ere long the rightful matter will be established without any farther dispute, by the Divine assistance; whereas without such sacrifice and submissiveness great harm might ensue.

The worst enemies of the Cause

The worst enemies of the Cause are in the Cause and mention the Name of God. We need not fear the enemies on the outside for such can be easily dealt with. But the enemies who call themselves friends and who persistently violate every fundamental law of love and unity, are difficult to be dealt with in this day, for the mercy of God is still great. But ere long this merciful door will be closed and such enemies will be attacked with a madness.

Requisites of teaching the Cause - advice from Baha’u’llah

A pleasing, kindly disposition and a display of tolerance towards the people are requisites of teaching the Cause. Whatever a person says, hollow and product of vain imaginings and a parrot-like repetition of somebody else's views though it be, one ought to let it pass. One should not engage in disputation leading to and ending with obstinate refusal and hostility, because the other person would consider himself worsted and defeated. Consequently further veils intervene between him and the Cause, and he becomes more negligent of it. One ought to say: right, admitted, but look at the matter in this other way, and judge for yourself whether it is true or false; of course it should be said with courtesy, with kindliness, with consideration. Then the other person will listen, will not seek to answer back and to marshal proofs in repudiation. He will agree, because he comes to realize that the purpose has not been to engage in verbal battle and to gain mastery over him. He sees that the purpose has been to impart the word of truth, to show humanity, to bring forth heavenly qualities. His eyes and his ears are opened, his heart responds, his true nature unfolds, and by the grace of God, he becomes a new creation ... The Most Great Branch gives a willing ear to any manner of senseless talk, to such an extent that the other person says to himself: He is trying to learn from me. Then, gradually, by such means as the other person cannot perceive, He gives him insight and understanding.
- Baha’u’llah  (Words of Baha’u’llah recorded by Haji Mirza Haydar-Ali, quoted by Hand of the Cause Balyuzi in ‘’Abdu’l-Baha - The Center of the Covenant of Baha’u’llah’)

How to recognize those in real authority

The ones in real authority are known by their humility and self-sacrifice and show no attitude of superiority over the friends…

Let the servant be known by his deeds, by his life!

To be approved of God alone should be one's aim.
- ‘Abdu’l-Baha  (Words of 'Abdu'l-Baha, recorded by Dr. Edward C. Getsinger and cited in Star of the West, vol. 6; no.6, June 24, 1915)

Proper attitude to have towards those serving on higher Baha’i administrative positions

When God calls a soul to a high station, it is because that soul has capacity for that station as a gift of God; and because that soul has supplicated to be taken into His service. No envies, jealousies, calumnies, slanders, plots, nor schemes, will ever move God to remove a soul from its intended place, for by the grace of God, such actions on the part of the people are the test of the servant, testing his strength, forbearance, endurance and sincerity under adversity. At the same time those who show forth envies, jealousies, etc., toward a servant, are depriving themselves of their own stations, and not another of his, for they prove by their own acts that they are not only unworthy of being called to any station awaiting them, but also prove that they cannot withstand the very first test - that of rejoicing over the success of their neighbour, at which God rejoices. Only by such a sincere joy can the gift of God descend upon a pure heart.

Envy closes the door of Bounty, and jealousy prevents one from ever attaining to the Kingdom of Abha.

No! Before God! No one can deprive another of his rightful station, that can only be lost be one's unwillingness to do the will of God, or by seeking to use the Cause of God for one's own gratification or ambition.

No one save a severed soul or a sincere heart finds response from God. By assisting in the success of another servant in the Cause does one in reality lay the foundation for one's own success and aspirations.

Holding the letter of the law vs. following the spirit through the heart

Holding to the letter of the law is many times an indication of a desire for leadership. One who assumes to be the enforcer of the law shows an intellectual understanding of the Cause, but that spiritual guidance in them is not yet established.

The alphabet of things is for children, that they may in time use their reasoning powers. 'Following the spirit' is a guidance by and through the heart, the prompter of the spirit. The Pharisees were extremely orthodox, holding strictly to the law. They were the cause of the condemnation and ultimate crucifixion of Jesus…

Not to place any obstacle before a soul searching for Truth

No obstacle should be placed before any soul which might prevent it from finding the truth. Baha'u'llah revealed His directions, teachings, and laws, so that souls might know God, and not that any utterance might become an obstacle in their way.

The “worker in the cause of God is like a gardener”

One day we spoke of an active worker in this Cause, and 'Abdu'l-Baha said:

"In this Cause, he who is active and who makes an effort will always meet with success. In worldly matters how often we see a man work hard for a lifetime and never achieve success. But the worker in the cause of God is like a gardener. The more attention he gives his garden, the more fruit will reward his efforts, or, like the traveler who has a great goal before him, no matter how hard the road, if he only keep on walking and is not turned aside by discouragements, he is sure, eventually, to reach his goal."

Stations of believers in the next world

Question: Will the stations of the believers continue to be different hereafter?

'Abdu'l-Baha answered:

"Yes, it will be necessarily so, for the Kingdom requires it.

"The King appoints one to be his prime minister, another to be his greatest general, another a soldier, and so on from the highest to the lowest. If all were generals or all were soldiers, there would be no kingdom.

"God created the mineral, the vegetable, the animal, and man. Had He created only man there would be no world."

The “language of the Kingdom is one. It is the language of the hearts.”

…if there is a universal language, how excellent it would be. We could talk with each other. How excellent it would be. Compare this with all the world, the greatest means for love is a universal language. It creates love amongst mankind. For the language of the Kingdom is one. It is the language of the hearts. Hearts create amity with each other. In the same way that the language of the Kingdom is one, so also should the human tongues be one. Then it will be perfect, Hidden and Manifest, inner and outer, will become one.

Under what circumstances kneeling and bowing are allowed

When ‘Abdu’l-Baha was leaving [the Shrine of the Báb], his honor Ibn-i-Asdaq, one of the famous teachers in Persia fell on his knees at ‘Abdu’l-Baha's feet. ‘Abdu’l- Baha said: ''According to the blessed command, it is not permitted to fall on the knees and bow down except before the blessed home and the tombs of Baha'u'llah and the Báb. Beware of deviating from the divine commands."

‘Abdu’l-Baha’s health and happiness

My health and happiness are in this, when I see the friends of God engaged in spreading the divine fragrances, arising to serve the Cause of God, forgetting every thought save that of teaching, casting into the corner of forgetfulness every matter but that of unity and harmony. Consider in every age what confirmation and assistance were received by those souls who devoted their time to serving the Cause and spreading the divine fragrances. On the contrary, those who were absorbed by personal interests or political affairs degraded not only themselves but their associates. Thus, in this day, the friends of God should see that all glory lies in teaching the Cause of God and that every happiness is found in the shadow of the Word of God.

Significance of "mystery" referred to in Tablets

Question: What is the significance of "mystery" referred to in the blessed tablets?

‘Abdu’l-Baha's answer: Mystery signifies the subjects and questions which are far beyond the minds and comprehensions of the people. When a perfect personage unveils and expounds them, fair souls comprehend them. Therefore the reality of the Manifestation of Christ was, in the cycle of Moses, a mystery of Divine Mysteries, which afterward became revealed in the Manifestation of Christ.

Offering thanks to Baha’u’llah

On April 23, 1912, 'Abdu'l-Baha spoke at Howard University, and from there He went to the home of Mirza Ali Kuli Khan for luncheon. Here He said:

"Thanks must be offered to Baha'u'llah because it is His confirmations that stir the souls. It is the blessings of the Abha Beauty that change the hearts. It is the reinforcement of the Kingdom of Abha that makes the mosquito an eagle, the ant a Solomon, the degraded, the center of honor."

The three processes in the teaching work

There are three processes in teaching: the first is to attract the people; the second is to convert the people; and the third is to become consecrated. There must be attraction, conversion, and consecration.

Divorce

The next question - Mrs. Sanderson's - was about divorce, if Bahá'u'lláh approved of it.

"Bahá'u'lláh - the Master smiled – “says that in this world there is nothing more absurd than divorce. If one has accepted another and is a good Bahá'í he never likes to believe in divorce. But if there be a case of difference between husband and wife, where it is entirely impossible to recreate their love, where it is not possible for them to live any longer with one another, then both should go to the [local] House of Justice [currently known as Spiritual Assemblies] and together, in perfect agreement, lay their case before it. And after this they should still wait a year, living apart but not permanently divorced, and their friends should give them good advice meanwhile. If, after one year, there is no possibility of becoming reunited, and no one is able to influence them, then this is the natural divorce.

"But between the real Bahá'ís there is no divorce. No one has ever heard of divorce between real Bahá'ís. The Bahá'í husband and wife will not allow affairs to reach such a condition."

The Master with children

On April 24, 1912, it was the privilege of the Baha'i children of Washington to have' Abdu'l-Baha at their meeting. He gave them the most helpful message, sweetened their little mouths with candy and blessed them with these words: "Praise be to God! These children are like a bouquet of roses in their utmost beauty, delicacy and sweetness."

How not to fear death

On the Celtic a woman came to 'Abdu'l-Baha and told Him that she was afraid of death. "Then," He said, "do something that will keep you from dying; that will instead, day by day make you more alive, and bring you everlasting life. According to the words of His Holiness Christ, those who enter the Kingdom of God will never die. Then enter the Divine Kingdom, and fear death no more."

Pearl and ruby necklace

In the evening, 'Abdu'l-Baha addressed the white and colored believers and their friends at the home of Mrs. Dyer, a member of the colored race, and after the meeting He remarked:

"Before entering the meeting I did not feel as if I would like to speak. But as soon as I saw the unity and attraction of the colored and white believers, I became interested and anxious and with perfect sincere love I spoke. I have compared the harmony of the different colors to that of a pearl and ruby necklace."

"O Baha'u'llah what hast Thou done?”

Later, while riding in a carriage on His way to the home of Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, the famous telephone inventor, 'Abdu'l-Baha very sweetly and softly chanted in Persian: "O Baha'u'llah what hast Thou done? O Baha'u'llah may my life be a sacrifice to Thee. Through what sufferings and hardships Thou hast passed Thy days. What calamities Thou didst endure. But in the end, what a formidable foundation Thou hast laid. What an evident banner Thou hast raised."

Entering the Kingdom of God

A woman… called on the Master and had many questions about Christ within, visions, dreams, spiritual life and many other topics. Lovingly Our Beloved discarded her ideas and notions about these matters, telling her the realities of every question. "Today," he said, "the door of the Kingdom of God is open, you must enter therein." "Where is this Kingdom?" she hesitatingly asked. "It's the Celestial Kingdom of Abha," the Master answered her. "Oh! I don't see it! Is it impossible for me to enter therein?" "No! Turn your face to God; trust in him, submit all your thoughts and ideas to Him and he shall lead you to His eternal Kingdom!" "But, I have been doing this for two long years." ‘Abdu’l-Baha said: "Very good! I hope you shall attain therein".

The vast range of Baha’u’llah’s Teachings

The greatness of the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh will be known when they are acted upon and practiced. Not one of a hundred has as yet come into force. All of your thoughts should be turned toward bringing these blessed teachings into practice.

Telepathy or communication from mind to mind

Another person asked about telepathy or communication from mind to mind. ‘Abdu’l-Baha replied:

It is evident. If a lover holds the hand of a beloved, it is obvious what feelings ensue. They communicate face to face and speak heart to heart, as this light is communicating now with human eyes, the sun with the earth, the cloud with the land and the breeze with the tree. This process is found in all things.

How to conduct Baha’i meetings

Then one of the friends comes in and asks how the Baha’is must conduct their meetings in London.

The Master’s answer: “When the believers gather together their sole object must be the commemoration of God. When all the friends are present, one in the most clear and effective voice, may read a prayer or commune. Then for 5 or ten minutes do most quiet communing with the source of life, and thinking how they should be better and act nobly; then one who knows how to speak may rise and deliver an address either on the proofs and evidences of the Cause, the hardships and tribulations of Baha’u’llah, the exposition of the Baha’i principles, quoting from the Tablets of the Blessed Perfection to the Kings and rulers etc, etc. When this is over, one or the same person may read another among the supplications, thus bringing the meeting to a close. Then they may either talk with each other in groups or may return to their homes or they may serve refreshments.

The questioner asked about music. ‘Abdu’l-Baha said: "As regards to music, they may act as they are pleased. If they like to have it, all right; if not, again it is all right."

“Until love appears among men, there can be no full happiness and peace.”

Love is the brightness of the beauty of God. If there be no love, this is the animal's kingdom, for the distinguishing feature of man's world is love. Until love appears among men, there can be no full happiness and peace. Notice how, when a person sits with a friend, his heart leaps, how happy he becomes, but when he sits with an enemy, what a punishment! We must therefore foster brotherhood and universal love.

One’s capacity

All men are not of the same capacity. To serve to full capacity is meritorious with God. God judges men by how they use their capacity.

Those who heard about the Faith and those who didn’t

It is not enough to be good and kind and to lead a religious life today; it does not count for much unless one accepts the Manifestation of God, if one has heard of Him; it is almost wasted. One must accept the Manifestation in His day. If one has not heard of Bahá'u'lláh, they are not to be blame; the blame lies with the Bahá'ís. If the Bahá'ís fail to teach the Faith, the people who do not hear of the Faith are not to blame. The blame lies with the Bahá'ís.

Baha’is must be distinguished

Bahá'ís must have a new way of life. They need to be different from other people. They must be distinguished. The more distinguished, the more they will attract people. The greater the distinction, the greater the attraction.

Union of husband and wife in the next world

Replying to another questioner, 'Abdu'l-Baha said that when two people, husband and wife for instance, have been completely united in this life their souls being as one soul, then after one of them has passed away, this union of heart and soul would remain unbroken.

Condition of souls in the next world

Mrs. S. asked some questions with reference to the conditions of existence in the next world, and the life after death; she said that having recently lost a very near relative, she had given much thought to this subject. Many thought that re-union with those we had loved, and who had passed on to the future life, would only take place after a long period of time had elapsed. She wished to know whether one would be re-united with those who had gone before immediately after death.

'Abdu'l-Bahá answered that this would depend upon the respective stations of the two. If both had the same degree of development, they would be re-united immediately after death.

The questioner then said, how could this state of development be acquired?

'Abdu'l-Bahá replied, by unceasing effort, striving to do right, and to attain spiritual qualities.

The questioner remarked that many differing opinions were held as to the conditions of the future life. Some thought that all would have exactly the same perfections and virtues; that all would be equal and alike.

Dialogue between man and the Prophets

Always, man has confronted the Prophets with this: 'We were enjoying ourselves, and living according to our own opinions and desires. We ate; we slept; we sang; we danced. We had no fear of God, no hope of Heaven; we liked what we were doing, we had our own way. And then you came. You took away our pleasures. You told us now of the wrath of God, again of the fear of punishment and the hope of reward. You upset our good way of life.'

The Prophets of God have always replied: 'You were content to stay in the animal world, We wanted to make you human beings. You were dark, We wanted you illumined; you were dead, We wanted you alive. You were earthly, We wanted you heavenly.'

To ride in “the Ship of God”

One must ride in the Ship of God; for this life is a stormy sea, and all the people on earth - that is, over two billion souls - will drown in it before a hundred years have passed. All, except those who ride in the Ship of God. Those will be saved.

The Clay Bird

In the Koran are many things referring to Christ not mentioned in the Gospel. For instance: it is said that Christ took a bit of clay and shaped it into the form of a bird. Then He blew upon it, and it flew away.

The interpretation of this is that the bird symbolizes an earthly man, who received spiritual education through the Christ. The story says: ‘He blew upon it, and it flew away.' This means that the man received the Breath of Life Eternal, and through this enlightenment, soared into the Heaven of Knowledge.

'Abdu'l-Baha's absolute naturalness -- an utter absence of any desire or effort to impress one with his greatness

Every morning it is the custom of the household to meet in the large sitting room, where tea is served, and the little children of the family come and chant for the Master while he drinks his tea. At this first meeting, at seven o'clock in the morning, how inexpressibly I was impressed by the absolute poise of the Master; his absolute naturalness; absolute freedom. There was an utter absence of any desire or effort to impress one with his greatness, which is majestic in its simplicity.

Teaching the Cause is the most important work: “this is not to be brought under special rules… they should teach in any way possible"

The essential thing now is teaching. This gathering of the convention is for this object, also to arrange for the building of the Mashriqu’l-Adhkar, or for choosing people to go out as teachers. These are the objects. In Persia there are no conventions. There is a Spiritual Assembly in each city, and all are engaged in teaching.

People should be engaged in teaching the Cause. Teaching should make one full of joy and happiness, it will attract one, it will bring spiritual susceptibilities, it gives extreme happiness and joyfulness. One's own self becomes enriched thereby.

Teaching the cause is the most important work in which anyone can engage, for in any other work there will not be such results as in this. Give great importance to work of importance, and this is not to be brought under special rules. It can't be, they should teach in any way possible. This will bring happiness, it also brings one nearer the kingdom of Abha, it will be the cause of joy and happiness and refreshes one.

Whatever the world of humanity is in need of is to be found in the Teachings of Baha’u’llah

Among the proofs are the teachings of the Blessed Perfection. Such teachings as have not been given since the beginning of the world, and these teachings refer to all mankind and the highest degree of advice is at hand. Advice in the utmost of eloquence and rhetoric; morals in the highest degree of perfection; politics in the highest degree of perfection; laws in the utmost of firmness; public management in the utmost of regulation. Whatever the world of humanity is in need of is to be found here. All the religions of the world see the utmost perfection of man in these.

What would happen if we live and act according to the teachings of Baha'u’llah for one year

Now is the time for us to work. I swear by the Blessed Beauty, that if we live and act according to the teachings of Baha'u’llah for one year, all the doors will be opened before us, and the world will become a wonderful world. Until now we have been greatly oppressed. Suppose you have a bird in this room with all the doors and windows closed, the bird cannot fly. The Baha’i Cause has been like that bird, but now is the time for our freedom. The restrictions are removed. Now we must make an effort, and the Cause will make wonderful progress.
- 'Abdu'l-Baha  (Words of ‘Abdu’l-Baha recorded by Agnes Parsons during her pilgrimage on January 8, 1920. Mrs. Parsons noted that the Master’s words were written down from memory the following morning, and not taken down verbatim at the time.)

Acquiring land for the Shrine of the Báb

The beloved Guardian told the pilgrims that, upon hearing of Baha'u'llah's instructions to 'Abdu'l-Baha to acquire the site on Mount Carmel for the resting-place of the Báb, the Covenant-breakers attempted to win the glory. Mirza Badi'u'llah started negotiations and worked hard to buy that land. He had intended to acquire the land and report the good news to Baha'u'llah. But he did not succeed. Baha'u'llah told him, "This is none of your business, it is for Aqá (the Master) to accomplish."

How to become a true servant

Someone in the audience asked, `What shall I do to become a true servant?' ‘Abdu’l-Baha replied:

Act in accordance with the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh. Do not only read His teachings but put into practice in your lives the Hidden Words and the other holy writings. Whatever I say is not even a drop from the ocean of the Supreme Pen and the treasure-filled sea of the bounty and favor of the Abhá Beauty.

‘Abdu’l-Baha knew some English

We met the Ladies of the Holy Household assembled in the Tea Room, and with them two widows of martyrs to the Cause of Baha'u'llah. Greetings and messages of love from the friends at home were given with joy; then we heard a firm, quick step approaching the Tea-Room. No need to tell us who! Instantly all arose, and there in the open doorway we first beheld ‘Abdu’l-Baha, smiling a Heavenly welcome. Entering, he gave to each of us a hearty grasp of his hand, saying in English "Good Morning!" with a motion of his hand inviting all to be seated; inquiring as to our health; had we enjoyed restful sleep, expressing the hope that our journey may have been made with comfort. ‘Abdu’l-Baha then, turning to Miss Alma Knobloch, asked: "How are the German Believers?" She replied: "They are united and harmonious and are very firm." ‘Abdu’l-Baha then said: "Many great souls will arise in Germany to spread the Teachings to a great extent. I have sent Tablets to the Believers and the Assembly, and also to you. I have prayed for them. In the time to come you will be very happy to think of them. It will give you great joy and pleasure." Turning to Mrs. Ida Finch, he asked: "How are the Believers in Seattle?" Mrs. Finch replied: "They are very faithful. Some of us are united, but not all." ‘Abdu’l-Baha said: "I hope when you return to America you will carry to them the power of uniting all." He then inquired of Miss Fanny Knobloch the condition of the Washington Believers. "They are well and they love each other very dearly," was her reply. After this, messages sent by the various Friends were given, and many precious messages for them received in return.

Some of the Prophets who either lived on Mount Carmel or spent some time there…

Many Israelitish prophets either lived here or passed a portion of their lives or sojourned for a while or spent the last days of their existence on this mountain... Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, David, Solomon, Moses, Isaiah, Zechariah and, last of all, Christ. Elijah lived on Mount Carmel. ... His Holiness Christ came to this holy mountain many times.

The historical significance of Mount Carmel

"This mountain [Carmel] is where Israel's prophets passed their nights in prayer. Every step of it has been blessed by the footsteps of the prophets... This land will be the envy of the world, the center of arts and sciences. 'Akka and Haifa will be connected and all the vacant lands will be cultivated. All these caves that you see have been the abode of the prophets, step by step. [1] Every atom of this soil is holy. All the prophets, while praying, longed to reach this day and give the glad tidings of the coming of the Lord. They prophesied that the Lord of Hosts would come and the tent of the Lord would be pitched on Mount Carmel... in all these mountains and caves the prophets of God prayed at night, shed tears, and longed to be with us in these days of the Blessed Beauty. Since I am a prisoner and cannot move, you make a pilgrimage on My behalf. My utmost desire is to go and visit in freedom, but I cannot. You go on behalf of 'Abdu'l-Baha and make a pilgrimage to all of the Holy Places... and beseech God's bouncy. I cannot go. I am a prisoner. I am re-incarcerated, and I have no permission to go out. The government prohibits me."

Seeing ‘Abdu’l-Baha eating meat

October 27, 1920 … Pilgrims House .. Luncheon ..

Mrs. CWe have always understood that ‘Abdu'l-Baha did not eat meat, but we see that he does. Is he not eating it to please us?

A.B … Yes, I eat it in order that I may be your partner. In the same way, in the world of the Kingdom, I may be your partner, God willing, that on earth and in heaven we may be co-partners. You are always and everywhere with me.

Eating meat is permissible in the religion of God

… in the religion of God eating meat is permissible. Man can live without meat. To kill an animal and eat his flesh seems to be cruelty, but today it is almost impossible for the people not to eat the flesh of animals. It is difficult to tell people not to eat pork, mutton, beef, fish. Supposing that they do not eat these, what are they going to do about drinking water: for in this glass there are thousands of living animalcule which cannot be seen under the microscope, swimming in the water. They are dancing in the air that man breathes… They enter the body of man and die. This cheese is full of them. If you put it under the microscope you will see them moving. When you consider this with a broader view, you see it is not possible not 'to eat animals. Why is it permissible?

We must observe that these animals which are in the cheese represent animal life without intelligence, but you are eating them. This transfers them from the animal kingdom to the human kingdom. They were without intelligence and now they find intelligence; they were knowledge zand now they attain knowledge. Their sensibilities were primitive now they become developed, they receive a portion in thinking and reasoning. Then these animals which you are eating evolve from a low stage to a higher stage of existence. Therefore it is permissible to eat animals.

Question: What will be the food of the future?

Answer: "Fruit and grains. The time will come when meat will no longer be eaten. Medical science is only in its infancy, yet it has shown that our natural diet is that which grows out of the ground. The people will gradually develop up to the condition of this natural food."

Steadfastness = faith, knowledge, obedience

In the spring of 1920 Emogene Hoagg, an early American believer, sailed for Haifa to report to her beloved ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. One day He called her to Him and asked her to tell Him about the Faith in America. After recounting some of her experiences and observations she asked Him why there was not more unity among the American Bahá’ís. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá laid His hand on a book beside Him, and said,

"In this book is a story of a man who went to a doctor for treatment. He told the doctor his symptoms. First, he told him of the pains in his head, and of his not being able to sleep. To which the doctor replied, 'That is due to old age.'

Then, the man told him that he had a great deal of pain in his stomach, and couldn't digest his food. The doctor replied, 'This is also due to old age.'

'Oh, but my arms and legs and back pain me constantly,' said the man testily. And the doctor said, 'This, too, is old age.'

Then the man grew very angry, and asked how it was possible that a doctor, who had studied for years to learn how to cure people of their ills, had nothing more to say to a patient than that his illness is due to old age. And the doctor replied, 'Your anger, too, is due to old age.' "

‘Abdu’l-Bahá, rising, replied to Emogene's question as to the cause of the lack of unity in America, "The condition in America is due to lack of steadfastness." And He strode out of the room.

When relating this story, Emogene added, "Steadfastness means faith, knowledge, obedience."

The Tablet of Visitation for the Báb and Baha’u’llah

The Visitation Tablet for the Tombs of the Báb and Bahá'u'lláh is in three parts: first part was revealed by Bahá'u'lláh to a believer who could not make the Pilgrimage. A few days after the Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh The Master asked Nabil to arrange selections to be chanted in the Tomb of Bahá'u'lláh. Of the Tablet of Visitation the first part is not addressed to God but to Bahá'u'lláh Himself. The second part is a prayer revealed by Bahá'u'lláh addressing God and the remaining paragraphs refer again to Bahá'u'lláh and not to God directly. It has been used ever since as the Visitation Tablet.

Question: Why did God allow evil to exist in the world?

Answer: A satisfactory explanation has never, and can never be given. Surely God could have created some other scheme that would have allowed less evil. His motives, the way He works, are beyond us. It would cease to be a Revelation if Americans could resolve all these mysteries - it would be a product of the American mind.

To abstain from meat and be content with vegetables

If one should wholly abstain from meat and be contented with vegetables, it would be much better. And how difficult it is for a man to kill an animal and to prepare the food for himself. But as it is already killed and we find it in the market we buy it. As it is now killed, it is better to take and eat it than to leave it to become out of use. But it is very hard for a soul to take a lamb and kill it and to make of it a certain dish for a meal. If the people could bear it, the prophets would prohibit the eating of flesh.
